Montessori?

The first thing we should get out of the way is a basic introduction to what Montessori really is. Many people talk about the trays and cute classrooms, but miss the big picture of what is intended..

Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.” Maria Montessori.

The Montessori method was created by Maria Montessori, an Italian mother, physician and educator, born August 1870. Maria created the Montessori way because she sensed that the traditional way of teaching wasn’t a fit every child. She started her research with children who had special needs and orphans, she took them in and observed each individual child. After observing them Maria began developing what we now call the Montessori method. Her research included findings such as, the sensitive periods, freedom within limits and a sense of order.

Her philosophy was based around the theory that every human is willing and eager to learn when they are placed in a prepared environment. There are a few key components to creating an environment fit for learning, these include; a well trained directress, multi-aged group, an uninterrupted work period, appropriate and guided choice of work. These are things a few things that Maria knew to include in her Casa de Bambino (House of Children). The Montessori setting is becoming more and more sought out because it sets out to value each child’s individuality, it promotes peace, independence, order and self correction.

The Montessori philosophy should not only be at school but should be a lifestyle that we provide for our children. Peace, love of nature, care for self and others as well as being part of a community, should be what we give our kids on a regular basis.
